Overview

An agile litigator and accomplished legal writer, Ben Christoff represents clients in trials and appeals in venues across the country, in matters involving a wide array of technologies.

Ben has over a decade of well-rounded experience advocating for clients in U.S. District Courts, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the International Trade Commission (ITC), and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. With a technical versatility honed by his chemical engineering background and diverse litigation practice, he has worked on matters spanning semiconductors, medical devices, memory, wireless communication, computer networking and databases, digital rights management, near field communication, tissue grafting technology, and biofuels.

Ben has recently played key roles in significant matters for household-name clients, including advocating for major consumer electronics companies in trials and appeals, and representing a leading auto manufacturer in a suit involving cellular communication built into vehicles. His work in these matters has included arguments on claim construction, jury instruction, and JMOL. Ben has also conducted direct- and cross-examination at trial.

Drawing on his background as a former Federal Circuit clerk and as an intern at the ITC and in District Court, Ben examines legal issues from all angles, leveraging a cross-venue insider’s perspective to develop effective litigation strategies that align with his clients' goals. Clients and colleagues also rely on Ben’s exceptional skills in written advocacy; he is frequently tapped for key aspects of trial preparation, including drafting high-stakes appeal briefs and cross-examinations. He is a co-author, along with retired Federal Circuit Chief Judge Randall R. Rader, of the third and fourth editions of Patent Law in a Nutshell, a reference guide for law students.

Outside of the office, Ben is a guitarist and enjoys playing tennis.
