Overview

Liz Ranks is a litigation principal experienced in patent litigation, as well as trademark, trade secret, copyright, and commercial litigation, both in U.S. District Courts and at the U.S. International Trade Commission.

Liz has participated in trials in U.S. District Court and at the ITC. She also has experience in arbitration hearings, mediation sessions, and hearings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. Liz’s patent litigation work has included a variety of technologies, from network switches to oscilloscopes, digital cameras, and software.

Liz brings passion and dedication to every part of every case she works on, whether she is drafting pleadings, drafting fact discovery requests and responses, taking and preparing for depositions, working with experts, drafting dispositive motions, or preparing for trial. Liz uses her excellent communication and organizational skills to keep cases moving in the right direction.

Prior to joining Fish & Richardson, Liz was a Judicial Extern to the Honorable Judge William G. Young of the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. Prior to law school, Liz worked as a biochemist, identifying novel gene mutations and studying glucose transport systems. Liz also worked for a medical device manufacturer, where she provided technical support for a wide range of products, including advanced multiplexing robotic assay systems.

    Liz is passionate about her pro bono work. She regularly participates in the Lawyer for the Day program, where she provides legal advice and assistance to tenants facing eviction. In other pro bono work, Liz has obtained favorable settlements for her clients in cases involving ERISA retirement violations, reversal of denial of unemployment benefits for a client undergoing treatment for cancer, and settlement of malpractice claims for a veteran. She also serves as the pro bono coordinating attorney for Fish’s Boston office. In 2023, Northeast Legal Aid named Liz a Pro Bono Champion.

    Named to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court's Pro Bono Honor Roll for providing 50 or more pro bono hours in a single year (2019-2021, 2023).
