Overview

Lawrence Jarvis has helped some of the world’s largest technology companies resolve intellectual property disputes at the U.S. International Trade Commission and at U.S. District Courts across the country. Clients rely on Lawrence’s careful attention to detail and quick response in critical moments to help ensure their goals are met and their cases are concluded effectively.

Lawrence’s litigation experience includes the representation of multiple Fortune 100 companies spanning a range of industries, including consumer electronics, video codecs, electric vehicles, and telecommunications. He has extensive professional experience in the areas of electrical engineering and computer science, including set-top box technologies, video coding and processing, cellular and wireless technologies, consumer electronics, information security technologies, database and cloud computing technologies, payment and transaction processing, semiconductor fabrication and layout, chip-level power management, and home security system technologies.

His litigation experience includes managing discovery and handling all aspects of a case in both U.S. District Courts and the U.S. International Trade Commission, including taking and defending depositions of both expert and fact witnesses, drafting and arguing dispositive motions and claim construction, pre-trial disclosures and pre-trial conference, directing and crossing expert witnesses and fact witnesses at trial and/or hearing.

In addition to his litigation work, Lawrence has also assisted clients with patent due diligence, prosecution, and other non-litigation patent analysis, including IP licensing. Lawrence is a patent attorney, registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Prior to joining Fish, Lawrence worked for several years as a software engineer for a Fortune 100 corporation, where he gained substantial technical experience developing software for network security, wireless networks, set-top boxes, video compression, and video conferencing application codecs. During his time working as a software engineer, Lawrence was a member of an R&D team focused on the development of HEVC related video coding algorithms and technology for the companies’ video streaming and playback products, and he also gained extensive experience developing cellular communication and network management software.

In his pro bono practice, Lawrence dedicates his time to Kids in Need of Defense, a nonprofit committed to the protection of children’s rights; the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation; and the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty. Outside the office, Lawrence likes to unwind by spending time with family and friends or playing basketball or flag football.

Experience

Philips RS North America LLC, et al. v. Quectel Wireless Solutions Co. Ltd., et al. (ITC). Fish represented Quectel in this dispute over wireless communication modules used in a variety of cellular-based wireless products. Fish obtained an initial determination finding of no violation, a finding of non-infringement and unenforceability for all patents asserted, as well as a finding that many of the asserted patent claims were invalid. The decision was affirmed by the full commission.

Koninklijke Philips NV, et al. v. Dell Inc., et al. (ITC). Fish represented multiple defendants in this infringement matter pertaining to patents directed to Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology. An initial determination of no violation was later affirmed in a Final Determination following a briefing and review by the Commission.
