Overview

Matthew Johnson focuses his practice on patent litigation in U.S. District Courts, the International Trade Commission, and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board.

He has experience handling pre-trial matters, including drafting legal research, interrogatories, requests for production, and subpoenas, as well as representing clients in patent-related disputes. He has also drafted and prosecuted numerous patent applications at the United States Patent and Trademark Office. His areas of technical experience include electrical engineering, electrical distribution systems, cybersecurity, semiconductors, nuclear power, naval weapons systems, reactor physics, thermodynamics, water chemistry, radiological controls, reactor dynamics, and reactor control systems.

Prior to practicing law, Matthew had a distinguished career in the United States Navy, including a deployment in support of the United States Joint Task Force in Syria and Iraq. He also supervised the maintenance and operation of two naval nuclear power plants onboard a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. He subsequently served as a Nuclear Surface Warfare Officer, where he instructed newly commissioned officers.

During law school, Matthew was the managing editor of the Virginia Journal of Law and Technology and was a leader of the University of Virginia School of Law Veterans affinity group.
