Michael Hamlin's practice emphasizes patent prosecution, freedom-to-operate studies, opinions, due diligence investigations, and licensing. He is a member of Fish & Richardson's strategic medical device industry group.
He has experience working with clients whose businesses focus on a wide range of technologies, including medical devices, sporting goods, consumer products, machine tools, and automotive design and manufacturing.
Michael has extensive experience conducting freedom-to-operate studies and drafting noninfringement/invalidity opinions that help clients assess and manage risk associated with launching new products. Additionally, he has conducted a large number of intellectual property due diligence investigations to assist clients with determining the value of IP to be acquired in connection with mergers and acquisitions. His portfolio management experience has enabled clients to develop robust portfolios that deliver value back to the business and protect their IP. Additionally, Michael has experience negotiating and drafting license agreements for clients.
Somewhat uniquely, Michael is also frequently involved in patent litigation matters, which has provided him with valuable experience to better advise clients in all areas of his practice.
After graduating from Cranbrook Kingswood High School, where he was the captain of the hockey team and won a state hockey championship, Michael spent a year playing junior hockey in Markham, Ontario. He then attended the University of Alabama in Huntsville, where he led his hockey team to two NCAA national championships and was named a First Team All-American. Today, he continues to play hockey in his free time and coach his son’s and daughter’s teams. Michael also enjoys watching documentaries, reading non-fiction books, and listening to a variety of audiobooks and podcasts.
