Paul Western focuses his practice on patent preparation, prosecution, and strategic intellectual property portfolio management. Paul uses a practical, real-world approach to technical IP issues, drawing from his 25 years of experience as an engineer and leader in various industries before becoming a patent attorney.
Clients ranging from small and mid-size companies to large companies and global enterprises rely on Paul’s advice to develop strong patents and valuable IP portfolios domestically and internationally. He also regularly conducts patentability, freedom-to-operate, product clearance, due diligence, infringement, and invalidity analyses.
Paul’s technical focus is largely in medical devices, mechanical technologies, and software/smart wireless devices. He has substantial experience with medical devices in the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, minimally invasive surgery, and extracorporeal blood-processing spaces.
Before joining Fish & Richardson, Paul was a product manager and project engineer with 3M Co. and, later, a general manager of manufacturing with Terumo Cardiovascular. He also has extensive patent experience from his time with the University of Michigan Office of Technology Transfer.
