Overview

Usman Khan, Ph.D., works with his clients to build, strengthen, and defend their patent portfolios through post-grant proceedings and patent prosecution. He has been involved in more than 50 post-grant proceedings and prosecuted more than 1,000 patent applications on behalf of foreign and domestic startups, entrepreneurs, educational institutions, and Fortune 500 companies.

Usman has extensive experience in a broad range of technologies, including semiconductors; software; signal processing / wireless communications and networks; batteries and supercapacitors; OLEDs, LEDs, and LCDs; mobile devices and displays; 3D displays; control systems; analog and mixed signal circuits; nanotechnology; cybersecurity; financial and business services; internet search and advertising; and medical devices.

Personable and diligent, Usman partners with clients to develop robust patent portfolios, crafting and executing strategies that serve to build their business and maximize the value of their intellectual property. He is attentive to the unique needs of each client and seeks to balance defensive and offensive approaches that will align with their business and organizational objectives.

In addition to his post-grant and prosecution work, Usman devotes significant time to his pro bono practice, including the representation of refugee and asylum applicants fleeing life-threatening situations.

Usman currently serves as chair of Fish & Richardson’s South Asian and Middle Eastern affinity group and is an active member of the Patent Trial and Appeal Board Bar Association. As vice chair of the Association’s conference planning committee, he has helped organize several annual meetings and leadership summits. In 2022, Usman was selected by Fish to participate in the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity Pathfinders program, an intensive professional development and leadership training initiative.

A lifelong soccer fan, Usman once played the sport semi-professionally and now enjoys coaching his children’s teams.

  • Usman provides pro bono representation to an Afghani family of six who was separated when fleeing the volatile conditions following the U.S. military’s 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan. Alongside other Fish attorneys and partner organizations, Usman advocated for his clients’ asylum status with government embassies in multiple countries, including working with the U.S. embassy in Ukraine, where the family had been settled just prior to the Russian invasion. The team’s efforts culminated in the family’s eventual reunification and safe arrival in the U.S.
